Sing!

I was watching my four year old Jalen play with his diggers the other day as I was working at the counter. I noticed that he was singing as he played. So I tried to listen in on what he was singing, and he was just making up a song about what he was doing. Isn't it amazing how kids can make up a song about almost anything? There is a lot of singing going on in the house these days, Jalen with all the songs that he is learning at school and Samuel jumping on the furniture singing Drenched in Love. Singing has an amazing way of teaching us things, do you remember one of the first songs we learn to sing growing up? The ABC's. Songs have a way of getting into our heart. Have you ever had a song stuck in your head? When we sing it just gets into us.

 Psalms 119:54 says this:

"Your statutes have been my songs, in the house of my pilgrimage."

Statute means a law, ordinance or a decree, this is how kings would rule, by issuing decrees. What does a decree require? It requires a person to speak forth the words to guide and direct what they want to happen, or they spoke to  enact their will. Look at it this way the Bible (God's statutes) are the words He spoke forth to guide your life in His will. He gave us His word so that we would know Him, and what he desires for you. His word speaks of who He is, His greatness and His glory. To sing His statutes is to sing about Him.

There is great power when we sing the word of God. God isn't just saying that we need to sing scriptures so that we memorize the Bible, while that is good. When He instructs us to hide the word in our hearts that we might not sin against Him, it is not so we don't break a rule but to release power. When we engage our vocals cords like the Bible says to and sing of His goodness and His mercy. When we sing that He is victorious and that the battle belongs to the Lord, the power of God gets released into the situation. Our voice unites with His breath and we release the power that is there when He speaks.

Don't be scared, let it out. It doesn't matter if you can't sing, I can't. My wife tells me that all the time, in fact she says we need to get the boys singing lessons because I have had a bad influence on their singing. I just respond with the Bible says make a joyful noise! And I make a noise, not sure you could call it anything else. Sing in the car, sing in the shower, sing while you're working. Sing when times are good, sing when times are bad.

That is the great thing about the end of the verse, it says that David sang here in the house of his pilgrimage. That is really just a fancy way of referring to the time period where he was running from Saul and in exile. What that says to you and me is that we can sing in any situation we are going through. No matter where we are or what season of life we are in, we can sing.

Whether we feel like it or not we can worship him, and when we do we bring His power and His perspective into the situation. We release our faith in His goodness, His faithfulness, our faith in His word that will never fail!
